I found this recipe in the cookbook, The Cuisines of Germany by Horst Scharfenberg and the German name for this recipe is Stolzer Heinrich. It is a very easy meal to make!! That is the name of the game for me during farmer's market season - it has to be quick, easy AND delicious!! This recipe fits all 3!! Very little preparation time!!
4 to 6 bratwursts or sweet Italian sausage
2 T butter
1 can dark beer (I just used Busch Beer because that is what my husband drinks - LOL!!)
3 to 4 T gingersnap cookies crushed (about 10 cookies)
1 small onion peeled and chopped finely
salt and pepper to taste
2 to 3 T beef stock or lemon juice (your choice)
Poke holes in the brats with a fork to keep them from bursting when you fry them. Roll the brats in flour. The brats will "plump" up.
We have had this recipe several times. As I said above, it is an easy meal to make. The favor of the gravy all depends on the type of beer you use. A darker beer will have a stronger beer taste.
